HOW TO BE AN EXCELLENT HOST

The most important part of being an excellent host requires strategy and anticipating your invitee’s needs. When someone new comes to your house, you want to them to be as comfortable as possible. Not comfortable to the point that they break decorum, but comfortable enough that they don’t feel a slight bit anxious.

HOW TO BE A GOOD HOST AT HOME

When someone is visiting your home, you should already be preparing. Cleaning and organizing the space you will all occupy is the priority. Even if this person has been to your home multiple times, no one likes clutter and dust. Simple things like taking out the trash, raising the thermostat a little, lighting scented candles, and putting things back in place will make your home more inviting.

Clean all seating arrangements and make sure they’re comfortable-looking. People will want to sit down as soon as they come into your home. If the couch is covered with dog hair, if it looks shabby, or if it has a smell, guest may feel anxious. Use couch and seat covers in a pinch. If you want to go an extra step, leave out bottles of water and snacks so you don’t have to leave your guest’s company when they ask for a refreshment.

Prepare all dining arrangements in advance. Polite people will try to ask if they can help in any way but remember friends and family don’t come over to your house to work. When you make sure the table is set and lunch or dinner is ready to serve shortly after they arrive, you can spend more time with your friends and family and less time stressing about coordinating things.

HOW TO BE A GOOD HOST FOR OVERNIGHT GUESTS

When you’re learning how to be an excellent host for overnight guests, think of it as an extension of the previous section. However, guests spending the night will need a little more attention and comfort. Again, planning is key. If the guest is new to your house, show them around the house.

Nothing will stress out a guest more than not knowing where the bathroom is. When you show the guest around to their sleeping arrangements, make sure the bedroom and bathroom is clean and replenished with every pleasantry. Remember to treat your guest, but your overall goal is to make them feel at home. If they are staying over, you can show them where everything is so they don’t have to chase you down.
